The trend is visible across Europe. In the Netherlands, the number of motorhomers who book in advance has increased from 41% to 67%, and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from 36% to 62%, partly due to the strong growth in the number of registered motorhomes. In the United Kingdom, booking in advance has been the norm for years – there, the percentage has increased from 72% to 76%.
Motorhome sites with facilities are the most popular
The preference for well-equipped sites is also clearly visible. For example, 68% of motorhomers prefer a motorhome site with facilities, followed by small campsites (47%). Free overnight spots and micro campsites remain popular among travellers seeking peace and simplicity, but the majority now value comfortand certainty — and are therefore increasingly booking in advance.
Safety on the road and better distribution for locations
‘Nowadays, motorhomers want more certainty on the road,’ says Lars Smit, commercial director at Campercontact. ‘In the past, people would just set off and hope for the best, but due to the growing crowds, travellers now prefer to be assured of a place. Through Campercontact, they can immediately see which locations are available and make a reservation — this gives peace of mind to the traveller and spreads demand across locations.’
Campercontact expects the number of bookable locations to increase further in the coming years. Not only because motorhomers are increasingly asking for it, but also because it helps campsites and motorhome sites to better spread their occupancy throughout the season.
