Why the winter months are surprisingly valuable for campsites and motorhome sites

When you think of winter, you probably don’t immediately think of motorhome travel. However, the results of our winter survey show a very different picture. The majority of motorhomers – almost nine out of ten – continue to use Campercontact during the colder months, to gather ideas, explore locations and make plans for the upcoming season. The open-ended responses reveal enthusiasm, curiosity and, above all, a need for inspiration. The winter season is therefore not a “calm before the storm”, but a phase of discovery and orientation.

Less travelling... more searching. Winter is an important time for decision-making.

The survey shows that three activities are particularly important in winter: orientation, viewing routes and discovering motorhome sites.

Perhaps the most striking finding is that over seventy percent of the motorhomers are already planning their summer holidays in winter. They dream of new destinations, open the Campercontact app and search for places to visit later in the year. While it is cold outside, routes are mapped out indoors and motorhome sites are saved. One respondent summed it on well: ‘We look at which direction we want to go.’

Around 10%of travellers actually already book overnight spots in winter. For the rest, their search determines what happens later. Winter is therefore primarily adecision-making time and that means something important for your location: people who see your profile now may be your visitors in July or August.

A huge opportunity – stay visible, especially now

The winter months are absolutely digitally essential for remaining visible, even if your location receives fewer guests at that time – or is even closed. By remaining visible in winter months, campsites or motorhome sites gain a significant advantage; your locations is saved, compared and remembered.

With more than seventy percent of respondents already planning their summer during the period when many locations communicate less, this creates a huge opportunity for those who do stay visible. Those who build trust in winter will reap the rewards in spring and summer.

As one user says: "I look for nice places in winter and save them. It gives me something to look forward to – and it's useful to have a list of favorites for each country for the spring.

Still on the road in winter

Of course, some motorhomers travel less in winter. However, a significant group remains active. No less than 79% travel in winter and even 41% even go on the road more than once a month. For these travellers, the focus is on peace, nature and overnight stops that are well-equipped for winter.

When travellers are on the road, they mainly want to know whether a location is open, so keep your opening hours up to date and highlight the comfort and accessibility you offer in winter. Think of sanitary facilities, heated rooms, availability of water and electricity, access in snow and other practical matters. Also post some winter photos on your profile, or share tips about regional winter activities.

Furthermore, don't forget to start talking about spring and summer now. Since 71% of motorhome travellers already plan their summer holidays in winter, now is the perfect time to promote your new season.

Would you like to know how to better promote your motorhome site or campsite during the winter months – or how to prepare now for bookings for spring and summer? Campercontact is happy to help you get started, so that motorhomers discover and remember your location more quickly, especially when they are planning their next trip.
